Why Trump's Allies Efforts to Smear the Mueller Investigation Simply Won't Work

Heather Digby Parton, Salon Fri, 16 Jun 2017 07:50:00 -0700 Our national crisis is entering a decisive phase. President Donald Trump was so angry that FBI Director James Comey refused to drop the investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn — and publicly declare that the president himself wasn’t under investigation — that he put himself in the crosshairs of a criminal case. On Wednesday night the Washington Post reported that special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating the president for possible obstruction of justice. Trump can complain forever about this being a witch hunt, but he brought this new problem entirely on himself. According to Politico, he’s obsessed: <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~www.politico.com/story/2017/06/15/trump-russia-investigation-obsession-239614> Trump, for months, has bristled almost daily at the ongoing probes. He has sometimes, without prompting, injected “I’m not under investigation” into conversations with associates and allies. He has watched hours of TV coverage every day — sometimes even storing morning news shows on his TiVo to watch in the evening — and complained nonstop. This is not a mentally healthy person. And just as he decided that Comey was a bad man, he has now decided that Mueller is as well. This came on Thursday morning: You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people! #MAGA <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/hashtag/MAGA?src=hash> — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 15, 2017 <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/875321478849363968> Immediately after the news broke that Mueller was planning to interview intelligence officials to determine if Trump had asked them to intervene, thus confirming an obstruction investigation, the White House had disseminated a hastily written, embarrassing list of talking points <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/PhilipRucker/status/875166972614516737> that was promptly leaked to the press. Trump in his own inimitable way echoed it with his plaintive early morning whine. As Salon’s Matthew Rozsa pointed out <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~www.salon.com/2017/06/15/heres-the-gops-attempt-at-damage-control-over-mueller-investigation-report/>, Trump’s most ardent supporters followed the talking points as well, starting with Sean Hannity on his Fox News show Wednesday night, who called for both Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (who appointed Mueller) to resign immediately. Andrew McCarthy of National Review said the special counsel was unnecessary, as did bomb-throwing author Ann Coulter <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://www.blogger.com/%3Cblockquote%20class=%22twitter-tweet%22%20data-lang=%22en%22%3E%3Cp%20lang=%22en%22%20dir=%22ltr%22%3ELeft%20wants%20to%20turn%20this%20into%20an%20%22attack%22%20on%20Mueller.%20%20No.%20HIS%20JOB%20IS%20UNNECESSARY.%20Sessions%20is%20perfectly%20capable%20of%20investigating%20Carter%20Page%20%3Ca%20href=%22https://t.co/qgUAaD0dGS%22%3Ehttps://t.co/qgUAaD0dGS%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%E2%80%94%20Ann%20Coulter%20(@AnnCoulter)%20%3Ca%20href=%22https://twitter.com/AnnCoulter/status/874500430004355073%22%3EJune%2013,%202017%3C/a%3E%3C/blockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src=%22//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js%22%20charset=%22utf-8%22%3E%3C/script%3E>. None of the defenders have been more obnoxiously combative than former House Speaker and Trump surrogate Newt Gingrich. He has been vociferous in his condemnation of Mueller in recent days, despite a glowing endorsement just three weeks ago: Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down — Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) May 18, 2017 <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/newtgingrich/status/864998445244743684> By last weekend Gingrich had changed his tune, telling a radio show host that Congress should abolish Mueller’s office because James Comey “makes so clear that it’s the poison fruit of a deliberate manipulation by the FBI director leaking to The New York Times, deliberately set up this particular situation. It’s very sick.” Talk show host Laura Ingraham agreed. I sure hope we see the Kasowitz team challenge the constitutionality of the special prosecutor's office. It's an abomination. — Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) June 15, 2017 <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/IngrahamAngle/status/875501108063608833> By Thursday, Gingrich had gone full Breitbart and was bleating incoherently about a “deep state” conspiracy: Muelleris now clearly the ti[p of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency. — Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) June 15, 2017 <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/newtgingrich/status/875314161345077248> The brazen redefinition of Mueller's task tells you how arrogant the deep state is and how confident it is it can get away with anything — Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich) June 15, 2017 <http://feeds.feedblitz.com/~/t/0/0/alternet/~https://twitter.com/newtgingrich/status/875314722765242368> Gingrich is selling a book called “Understanding Trump,” so that explains a lot of this. And he’s always been hyperbolic and overwrought. But he’s also always been a hardcore national security hawk, so his sudden concern for the encroachments of the surveillance state is pretty rich. Donald Trump is the first and only American citizen he’s ever defended against the “deep state.” Related Stories * The Legal Team That Mueller Picked to Help Him Tells Us a Lot About the Russia Investigation <http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/legal-team-mueller-picked-help-him-tells-us-lot-about-russia-investigation> * Trump Is Turning His Back on Having a Future with Cuba <http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/trump-turning-his-back-having-future-cuba> * Trump's Businesses Have a Long, Nasty History of Money-Laundering Charges <http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/trumps-businesses-have-long-nasty-history-money-laundering-charges> Attachments: alternet.jpg 0 bytes
