What's the deal with all the tens of thousands of messages per day flooding the network? What is the protocol going to do to mitigate this?

Well I just see a couple of hundret per hour. That looks like normal usage. It is just an awfull lot if you first start the node resp. restart it after quite a time because it has to catch up. No it's definitely way more traffic recently. In addition the messages themselves seem to be bigger. Have a look at the messages.dat file. It's been steadily increasing in size over the last few weeks and is now almost 200 Mb.
