Subscribed to some supposedly active chans, but they are all empty. Is this even working?

It is working. You just have to be patient. Some of us are laid back here and lurk more than we post ... we don't usually respond to everything that comes down the wire ... mainly to that which is curious or really interesting. I hope this helps. Bitmessage is not like Reddit where you check in 3 times a day ... it's more of a 3 times a week affair.

If you are new, tell all your friends, and all of you make a private chan just for each other.

We are lurking with interest.

I installed this back in April, talked to some people, then shut it off and forgot about it until now. Will I miss out on messages sent between then and now? Maybe I got some but not all? (Except they show up as being from today.) Has something to do with TTL?

Basically it repeats the message to private addresses until they are received, but chan messages are only repeated for a matter of a couple of days. What you will only see is the replied to messages from the last week or so, maybe longer if it is contentious like the god spam from 411 chan. Also, it is possible to run bitmessage on a desktop continously for a while, and then copy over the messages.dat to your laptop.

Thanks! I have another question: I saw there's an archive of chan messages on the web, but it didn't go back very far. Are messages from earlier archived somewhere?

The NSA have an archive of every message ever posted on Bitmessage, but I doubt very much that they'll share it with you.

I've got no idea if there is another archive. Usually this would require comeone to run it on a desktop continously, then host via something like Bitboard to their website. Clearly there must be some kind of software which does that, as Beamstat seems to work differently to Bitboard. (Which is for local browsing of chan messages on your browser). I would suggest that you ask on the bitmessage chan.

I was thinking the same thing. It appears Beamstat drops messages after a short time. It would be nice to have access to a permanent archive. Does anyone have a historical database of bitmessages?

How much $$$ ?

LOL, yes there is that. You'd need to join them as an employee, then access Palantir to get all of bitmessage.
