A virus?

[chan] general
Jul 6 07:52

No, it is not a virus. It is python code for a benign script. That displays a message with a puzzle. If you don't trust it (and why should you?) run it in a VM on the old machine in the corner with no personal files (which almost everyone here has three of). This is an example of one way to obfuscate python code.

What extention do you save it with, and what command do you use to run it?

[chan] general
Jul 6 09:09

It is a python script. Save it as secret.py ... then at command prompt cd to the directory: $ python2 secret.py Don't take my word for it, though. It should only be done in a vm on a air gapped junk box. That is the only way to test untrusted scripts. Then you can reverse engineer and look at source to ensure it's not malicious. I have two such junk machines for fiddling with untrusted stuff. I used some interesting code obfuscation. You should be able to forensically reverse it, but it's a doozie.

Help on built-in function exec in module builtins: exec(source, globals=None, locals=None, /) Execute the given source in the context of globals and locals. The source may be a string representing one or more Python statements or a code object as returned by compile(). The globals must be a dictionary and locals can be any mapping, defaulting to the current globals and locals. If only globals is given, locals defaults to it. '\'\'\'\nYOU HAVE UNSCRAMBLED THE CODE.\n\nHow did you do it?\n\npyminifier is broken so I use this method until they fix it.\n\n\'\'\'\n\nprint "\\n\\n"\n\nprint "------------------------------"\n\nprint " THIS CODE IS SCRAMBLED EGGS. "\n\nprint "Descramble for secret message."\n\nprint "------------------------------"\n\nprint "\\n\\n"\n' Don`t ever make people exec your code.

Did you unwind the first round of exec with a print statement? That's what I would have tried first off. Do tell how you went about it. > Don`t ever make people exec your code. Yeah, yeah; I was not really expecting anyone to actually *run* that code. But you examined it--totally harmless. Now it's your turn to proffer a pythonista puzzle. Proffer nothing too genius; you'd never get my stumped response.
