Keep in mind, however, that fully anonymous posting using channel address is a standard capability of the Bitmessage protocol. The messages will be relayed correctly by the network, delivered to all users, archived by services like Beamstat etc. Likewise, blacklisting is a standard feature of the PyBitmessage client that allows your computer to automatically drop (delete) messages that it would otherwise display on your screen, based on some rules that you define. It has no impact on the rest of the network; your client will still relay those messages, decrypt them and will even allow you to send them. It will just not show them to you. To use the blacklisting feature on channel addresses is a matter of personal choice, with zero impact on the Bitmessage network. Depending on your personal interests, it may improve or degrade your own Bitmessage experience. Give it a try, but not because some anon said "a lot of people" do it. In a system like Bitmessage, the number of people is unmeasurable and ultimately irrelevant. Protocol is law. This message, and its parent, have been posted anonymously from a channel address.

Most humans you'd want to talk to on here seem to use blacklisting. The garbage trolls stick to the chan addresses. Sure, there are some diamonds in that rough, but they're not worth my sanity having to look at the from:chan crap.

That is right. Blocking channel addresses is some defence, but there is always the risk that the trolls learn to generate and use throw away addresses. You can also add the requested amount of work, also on channels, it seems. Bitmessage in it's current shape has some defences against trolls, but I have not seen much testing or documentation. Should we set up a team to test the quality of the defence measures available, especially in combination? As a result we also could get better ideas of what new features should be requested (like more expensive address generation, read only channels). Somewhere I saw the claim that we already have read only channels, by setting the demanded work to 300 (or higher). I have not tested it.

I don't get it. If a troll is a person like all the other channel participants, only with better determination, superior technology and more time on their hands, how can any uniformly applied countermeasures (in a stateless anonymous environment there is no targeting) affect the troll while leaving non-troll users unaffected? Put it this way, if you introduce artificial hurdles in the system, won't this allow the trolls to win by outwearing or out-CPU-ing the honest users? And if this happens consistently, what do you estimate will be the effect on the honest users and on the community in general? Maybe someone smarter than me has an answer.

>Put it this way, if you introduce artificial hurdles in the system, won't this allow the trolls to win by outwearing or out-CPU-ing the honest users? The answer to that is yes. >And if this happens consistently, what do you estimate will be the effect on the honest users and on the community in general? Many of the good users will leave, and only the trolls and snotgobblers will be left. And that is what many countries and government agencies want. To stifle BM of free speech.

But you have time to reply. How do you "not have time" to ignore a message if you don't want to read it?
