> what if lots of people began to use BM.. would we need more > bandwidth an disk space? Yes and no. Yes because if nodes can't handle the traffic, the network will overload and and stop working. No because there is a solution. The bitmessage protocol defines "streams" that allow nodes to handle a part of the network instead of the whole. The objects, address and version commands do have fields for stream number, but at least PyBitmessage always uses stream number one. In other words it hasn't been fully implemented yet. There were a lot of debates about the exact design. The whitepaper describes a binary tree with single-stop route pathfinding. This isn't necessarily the optimal approach and about a dozen alternatives were proposed. I'm leaning towards using bloom filters, which the node would adjust on the fly depending on whether it wants to use more or less resources. A bit more technical description is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/bitmessage/comments/63un8f/streams_and_scaling/ The protocol already defines the stream number as a varint, which means the number can be represented as a 8-byte digit (up to 2^64, which is a 20 decimal-digits number). While not unlimited, it should be big enough to scale to the whole planet, probably a star system as well. For greater scale than a star system, Bitmessage wouldn't work anyway so I'm not worried about that. There doesn't appear to be an urgent need for scaling at the moment so it's not a super high priority, however I plan at least extending the protocol so that there are fields for bloom filters soon, so that if someone else wants to implement it, it will be compatible.
