I tried to research into this topic and couldn't find any answers to the problems I'm facing: I have no prior knowledge to it but actually what I'm trying to do is, to make a Windows software make use of a cluster. What I am imagining is this: Bind some low cost computers like PI's ( not necessarily PI's) together. Let them work together with a client computer, which runs a virtualization software, which merges the whole cluster as one unit or computer with the combined processing power. Run any windows program / x64 software ( not capable of distributed computing or clustering) - in this case for example ( not the real example ) using it with bitmessage to run the PoW faster. Maybe run windows server on it? Is there a way to use virtualization software to combine the cluster into one client? Just like working with a standalone machine? I can already imagine answers like: its impossible, or google it. But let me say this, even if the software would not be capable to work with a cluster.. I would pay a programmer to build an interface for the given software to make it compatible with clustering. Maybe possible then? I really need to know. Can't afford a 10.000$ machine. Any clustering enthusiasts here? Greets

You're partially answering the question yourself. While binding together nodes into clusters would be quite possible, and having it run distributed tasks on it, it's not as easy to just "take any application and make it run on it". If the application doesn't even support basic multithreading it's indeed impossible. An algorithm that's designed to run in a serial fashion won't go any faster if you throw more cores at it. But even if it supported multithreading but not distributed computing, you're still going to have a hard time. It would require that you'd introduce some kind of transparency layer upon the entire cluster, which emulates a single machine/architecture to the application. This would involve to make any memory accesses transparent to the application, and would require to distribute threads and code dynamically to nodes. I.e. this would require a nightmare of a cluster-OS, and if the application is using ANY kind of shared datastructures you're going to introduce a shitload of network overhead just to keep the memory accesses consistent. Basically saying: Even if you got that far, a system with a 16 core CPU (and Imma lean myself out the window and say this also applies to a CPU with only 8 physical cores and hyperthreading) would most likely be MUCH MORE performant than a cluster with 16 single-core nodes, just due to overhead.

To add onto what another commenter said, even if the software you're trying to distribute across a cluster was already multithreaded, that doesn't mean it's going to be faster on a cluster. Multithreaded programs are intended to be run on a single computer with unified RAM, so if you throw that out the window and make every RAM go across the network you're very likely going to run into some pretty serious memory throughput problems. Similarly, you can't just take a multithreaded CPU program and run it on a GPU and expect things to be faster (even though it is certainly possible to run it on a GPU, just as it is possible to run it on a cluster); with the GPU, all memory has to go across the PCI bus, which is going to be a problem for anything but the most trivial and distributable problems (like the Bitcoin or Bitmessage PoW function, for example, where threads don't share any memory to begin with). If you want many small machines to emulate one big machine to run some heavy software without modification, that's very difficult. You need some sort of "distribution layer" between the OS and the application intercepting and mangling all the syscalls (and Windows API is insanely large). Then you need a management and networking system to connect the machines to a cluster. Given the amount of code within common OSes, doing an ABI-compatible distribution layer is a hercules task, so academics usually developed specialized OSes like Plan9 or Amoeba. So even on distributed OSes, a single process is NOT distributed onto multiple machines. So instead of doing the distribution at the OS layer or below, distribution is usually done at the application layer: Split the task in multiple processes that can run independently on multiple machines. TL/DR: If you want to distribute the load of a single ultra-heavy process (from some software you can't even modify) onto multiple machines, you're out of luck.
